Are you wanting to get a backyard netball or basketball court for your little ones to practice on? Not sure how long a netball court is? Or maybe you’re wondering “what are standard netball court dimensions?”
What if we told you that basketball and netball court sizes are quite complementary, and it might be worth getting a backyard basketball court that’s multi-purpose?
Here we break down the key measurements to help you plan the perfect multi-sport court in your own backyard.
NETBALL COURT SIZE
A standard netball court is 30.5 metres long and 15.25 metres wide. The court is then divided into equal thirds which measure 10.176 metres by 15.25 metres. The centre third is where the centre circle is located, while the two thirds which bookend the court are where the goals are located.
The lines that run along the netball court length are called the sidelines and the shorter sides are referred to as the goal lines. These goal lines, or base lines, are where the ring stands. A netball ring is 3.05 metres above the ground.
By comparison, a basketball court is 15 metres by 28 metres—this means you can have a playing surface for both sports in one. Plus, the standard height of a basketball ring is 3.04 metres above the ground, that’s just 10mm difference.
Having the flexibility of a multi-court space is a great addition for a home with a lot of outdoor space, or even a high school or local park. If you need a court tailored to your needs, or just want to customise a baller court, try our Court designer to build your own dream court.
If you have less space to work with, our half court basketball set up may be your best bet.
Typical half-courts measure 7 metres by 10 metres while a smaller set up is typically 5 metres by 9 metres.
The semi-circle that encompasses a netball goal needs to have a radius of 4.9m from the goal line, while a basketball free-throw line is 5.8 metres from the baseline. This means that you could fit in line markings for both basketball and netball in a medium court.
DreamCourts court surfacing includes all the line markings you need, and we can do multi-sport court lines in different colours to avoid confusion. This is especially handy if your kids are showing potential in more than one sport, or they’re still working out which code they prefer.
Depending on the space you have, our Pro Containment netting may help keep the game in one place.
It’s important to consider the basketball hoop or netball ring before installing your own backyard basketball court or netball court at home. This is because the ring placement decides the court position and the position of the court lines. Make sure you have enough clearance above the ring for any dunks, and below for secure footings. If you’re using the court for different sports, our DreamHoops adjustable rings are perfect because you can easily adjust the height up and down to suit.
Having a practice space to train at home will help your young pros develop their skills and confidence far beyond their peers. And because DreamCourts have an official partnership with the NBL, you know that you’re getting a pro-level product to give them the very best home court advantage.
